Chunka Mui is a co-founder and the managing director of the Devil’s Advocate Group, an alliance of critical thinkers that helps organizations stress test their strategies. His perspectives are shaped by more than 25 years as an author, researcher, manager and business advisor.

Chunka is coauthor of two books and numerous articles. He is the co-author, with Paul Carroll, of Billion-Dollar Lessons: What You Can Learn From the Most Inexcusable Business Failures of the Last 25 Years (Portfolio, 2008). The Globe and Mail named Billion-Dollars Lessons the best business book of 2008. Inc. magazine recognized it as one of the best books for business owners published in 2008. Chunka is also the co-author, with Larry Downes, of Unleashing the Killer App: Digital Strategies for Market Dominance, the digital strategy best seller (Harvard Business School Press, 1998). In 2005, The Wall Street Journal named that book one of the five best books on business and the Internet. Chunka’s articles have appeared in numerous magazines and journals, including Harvard Business Review, Chief Executive, and CIO Insight.

Chunka’s consulting work focuses on two critical elements of strategic success. In the early stages of strategy setting, he helps clients identify and explore strategic options––with an emphasis on breakthrough thinking and ensuring that all plausible alternatives are considered. (Premature closure—the tendency to home in on an answer long before all information is evaluated—is always a danger, but especially so in times of turmoil.) Later in the strategic process, Chunka orchestrates and leads independent stress tests of strategies and acquisitions in development.

Chunka also provides retainer-based advisory services where he acts as a sounding board and thought partner, offering candid, ongoing feedback on key issues that clients face.

Chunka was previously a managing partner and the chief innovation officer at Diamond. Prior to Diamond, he was a vice president at CSC Index. Chunka was born in Hong Kong and, after immigrating at a tender age, grew up on the south side of Chicago. Chunka honed his love of technology and inquisitive nature at MIT, where he earned a B.S. degree in computer science and engineering.
